Turn out the Lights!

Monday, September 8, 2025

Every spring and fall, billions of birds migrate north or south across the U.S.

Many of these birds, even ones that are normally active during the day, migrate at night.

For example on the night of September, 7, 2025, over 7 million birds were estimated to have been migrating over Illinois. Peak migration nights for Naperville are going to occur from Sept 3-Sept 30, but migration starts in August and continues into October.

  • Barn swallows, hummingbirds and geese are just a few of the birds that migrate.
  • But light pollution attracts and disorients them as they fly along.
  • They can get confused and exhausted, making them more likely to collide with buildings, power lines, communication towers and more.

However, you can help these migrating birds!

  • Turn off outdoor lights or use motion activated bulbs.
  • Close curtains and blinds so indoor light doesn't steam outside.
