Naperville Park District Offers Virtual Fitness Classes

Naperville Park District fitness staff has been busy creating a variety of virtual fitness classes to help residents enjoy fun, effective workouts in a social environment while at home. Three options are available: 1) a paid monthly virtual group exercise pass for unlimited access to a variety of classes, 2) paid, premium virtual classes that run once a week for six weeks, or 3) a free option to view several fitness videos on YouTube via the NaperParks2You page.

“We know that virtual group exercise classes can be a lifeline for those isolated at home,” said Brad Wilson, director of recreation and facilities. “Regular physical exercise and the encouragement of social contact, even if it’s virtual, can boost mental health and overall wellness that will help residents through the coronavirus crisis.”

The virtual group exercise pass for May is available for purchase at www.napervilleparks.org for $15 for residents and $22.50 for nonresidents. The pass will provide unlimited access to 15-20 live virtual fitness classes each week, beginning May 4, including yoga, Pilates, total body conditioning, Zumba, meditation, FIT-45 and others.

A second option is to register for a premium, live virtual class that meets once a week for six weeks. As of April 23, individuals may choose from Gentle Yoga, Yoga for Immunity, Kickboxing and Strength, Zumba Gold or Shape and Tone.  These classes will provide continuity over a six-week period and are not part of the menu of classes for the monthly pass. To register, visit www.napervilleparks.org, click the “Online Registration” tab and search for “virtual fitness.”

Additionally, as of May 3, several YouTube fitness videos will be uploaded to the Fitness category of the NaperParks2You page at https://napervilleparks.org/naperparks2you, giving everyone free access to these at any time. This is just one of many categories of free activities that individuals or families can enjoy from home.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 Naperville Park District officials heard the good news for which they have been waiting for many months: the District has achieved national accreditation through the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).

The decision was announced at the NRPA national conference in Atlanta following a formal hearing before the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).

Naperville is only the second park district in Illinois to earn this distinction and the 104th nationally accredited agency in the nation; there are more than 10,000 recreation agencies in the United States. The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies accredits a handful of park agencies each year that have completed a multi-step process involving a self-review by the agency, a site visit, and an evaluation and formal report by the Commission.

“We are extremely proud to bring this honor to Naperville,” said Park District Executive Director Ray McGury. “It’s an affirmation of our high standards and also an encouragement to continue bringing high quality recreation and parks experiences to our community.”

The Park District’s accreditation process began approximately one year ago and included an extensive self-evaluation by staff and a 5-day visit from CAPRA reviewers this past July. Maintaining the accreditation requires annual reports and 5- and 10-year reviews.

Park District staff members noted that the CAPRA process has helped them see the big picture, focus on long term goals and plans, review plans more regularly, organize documents so that they are accessible and useable, and collaborate more effectively with other departments and outside organizations.
