Naperville Park District Releases Draft of Proposed 2019 Budget

A draft of the Naperville Park District’s proposed 2019 Budget is now available for public review online at https://www.napervilleparks.org/about/finances/cafrbudgettreasurersreport.  A paper copy may be viewed at the Park District Administration Building, located at 320 W. Jackson Ave., and at Fort Hill Activity Center, located at 20 Fort Hill Drive.

The Naperville Park District Board of Park Commissioners will vote on the adoption of the 2019 Budget at the December 13, 2018 meeting.

The 2019 budget will support capital projects that help the District develop, expand and take care of parks and facilities to serve the community. A major project beginning in 2019 is the development of Southwest Community Park to provide recreation for a rapidly growing residential area. A second initiative breaking ground in 2019 is the 95th Street Community Plaza at Frontier Sports Complex, just south of the 95th Street Library.  Additionally, the District will expand the group exercise area at Fort Hill Activity Center by 4,000 square feet to accommodate the need for more studio space. Other capital projects planned for 2019 include playground renovations at the Riverwalk, Heatherstone Park and Three Meadows Park, sports field renovations at Knoch Park and sports lighting renovations at DuPage River Sports Complex.

The 2019 operations budget will support the District’s commitment to continuous improvement, including a plan to attract and retain both seasonal and full time staff in a competitive labor market. 

“Following a year of long-term planning and seeking input from our residents, the District is ready to begin several capital projects with the goal of promoting a healthy community at the best value for taxpayers,” said Executive Director Ray McGury.

Funds raised through the Naperville Parks Foundation support the Naperville Park District’s Fee Assistance Program. The Naperville Parks Foundation supports the recreation needs and desires of the residents of Naperville – encouraging health and wellness, fitness, family time, and fun. On Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 Naperville Park District officials heard the good news for which they have been waiting for many months: the District has achieved national accreditation through the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).

The decision was announced at the NRPA national conference in Atlanta following a formal hearing before the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).

Naperville is only the second park district in Illinois to earn this distinction and the 104th nationally accredited agency in the nation; there are more than 10,000 recreation agencies in the United States. The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies accredits a handful of park agencies each year that have completed a multi-step process involving a self-review by the agency, a site visit, and an evaluation and formal report by the Commission.

“We are extremely proud to bring this honor to Naperville,” said Park District Executive Director Ray McGury. “It’s an affirmation of our high standards and also an encouragement to continue bringing high quality recreation and parks experiences to our community.”

The Park District’s accreditation process began approximately one year ago and included an extensive self-evaluation by staff and a 5-day visit from CAPRA reviewers this past July. Maintaining the accreditation requires annual reports and 5- and 10-year reviews.

Park District staff members noted that the CAPRA process has helped them see the big picture, focus on long term goals and plans, review plans more regularly, organize documents so that they are accessible and useable, and collaborate more effectively with other departments and outside organizations.
