Chicago Pickleball Open July 17-21 at Nike: Spectators Invited

Community invited to opening events and to view tournament matches

Who:                     Chicago Metro Pickleball will host the tournament at Naperville Park District’s Nike Sports Complex. Over 400 players registered for the tournament, including both professional and amateur players from the Chicago area and from across the USA, and some of the nation’s top-seeded players. Community members are invited to attend the matches as spectators free of charge; they also are invited to participate in the opening day events.


What:                   Chicagoland’s first major pickleball tournament, the Chicago Pickleball Open, includes mens and womens singles and doubles matches and mixed doubles. The professional competition offers a $25,000 purse. Amateur matches will take place for players at levels 3.0 and above and age levels range from juniors to seniors. Opening events that are free to the public are an introductory pickleball clinic and a demonstration by pickleball pros.


The Chicago Pickleball Open will hold a "Dunk for Kids Schools" fundraiser, presented by Gamma, to support bringing pickleball equipment and supplies into the local schools in Naperville and surrounding communities. Various professional players, local celebrities and pickleball enthusiasts will take the "seat" for those wishing to dunk them for the fundraising drive.


When:     Opening events on Wed., July 17:

  • Ribbon Cutting Ceremony - 5:45 p.m.
  • Free Introductory Pickleball Lesson - 6:00 p.m.
  • Pros Exhibition Match - 7:00 p.m.

Tournament matches are scheduled on Thursday, July 18-Sunday, July 21


Where:                All events will be held at Nike Sports Complex at the pickleball and tennis courts. Parking is available at the entrance at 288 W. Diehl Road and at the entrance at 1520 N. Mill Street.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 Naperville Park District officials heard the good news for which they have been waiting for many months: the District has achieved national accreditation through the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).

The decision was announced at the NRPA national conference in Atlanta following a formal hearing before the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).

Naperville is only the second park district in Illinois to earn this distinction and the 104th nationally accredited agency in the nation; there are more than 10,000 recreation agencies in the United States. The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies accredits a handful of park agencies each year that have completed a multi-step process involving a self-review by the agency, a site visit, and an evaluation and formal report by the Commission.

“We are extremely proud to bring this honor to Naperville,” said Park District Executive Director Ray McGury. “It’s an affirmation of our high standards and also an encouragement to continue bringing high quality recreation and parks experiences to our community.”

The Park District’s accreditation process began approximately one year ago and included an extensive self-evaluation by staff and a 5-day visit from CAPRA reviewers this past July. Maintaining the accreditation requires annual reports and 5- and 10-year reviews.

Park District staff members noted that the CAPRA process has helped them see the big picture, focus on long term goals and plans, review plans more regularly, organize documents so that they are accessible and useable, and collaborate more effectively with other departments and outside organizations.
