Tuesday, June 2, 2026
With the summer season upon us, schedules are bound to quickly fill up with vacations, activities, events and more. While we try to cram everything we want to do into our already busy lives, it is important to take time to relieve daily stresses, especially during a season meant for enjoying the outdoors. The Naperville Park District provides the community with a variety of outlets to relax. Whether it’s solo adventures or group activities, there are a number of ways to unwind and simply enjoy the summer season.
Spend Time in Nature
Open space at Sportsman's Park.
Immersing yourself in nature is an incredibly effective way to reduce stress and lower cortisol levels. “Touching grass” is a simple way to improve mood and restore a sense of calm. Not only does unplugging from electronic devices remove a source of stress, but getting sun exposure and absorbing a natural dose of vitamin D elevates your mood and lowers blood pressure.
The Naperville Park District has many ways that encourage the community to get outdoors, including the over 70 miles of trails available across the city. Local trails provide easy access to activities such as walking – one of the most effective ways to soothe the nervous system. There are various types of trails in Naperville to enjoy, including scenic routes like the Naperville Riverwalk or paths surrounded by trees and wildflowers such as those throughout Knoch Knolls Park. Regardless of the trail you choose to explore, a causal stroll or an adventurous hike throughout Naperville is a great way to reduce stress and reap many other benefits.
Gardening is another outdoor activity linked to reduced anxiety and stress. Gardeners practice mindfulness as they dig, plant, weed or trim, and gardening can be incredibly therapeutic. Watching homegrown vegetables and flowers flourish can boost confidence and give gardeners a sense of accomplishment as there is a tangible result from the work put into the activity. In Naperville, the Park District’s Ron Ory Community Garden Plots give local gardeners opportunities to make their green vision come to life. The Community Garden Plots are perfect for individuals who may not have space at home to garden or are new to the hobby and are seeking the support of a welcoming community of gardeners.
Activities with Friends and Family

Spending quality time with friends and family can have a positive impact on mental health and stress levels. While technology has provided a convenient way to connect with loved ones, there is no replacement for spending intentional time in person with others. The Park District provides plenty of opportunities throughout the year for individuals to get together with friends and family and create lasting memories.
One of the Park District’s annual summer series, Concerts in Your Park, brings a variety of bands and music genres to neighborhood parks. Every summer, friends, families and neighbors gather to enjoy free musical entertainment on a Sunday evening. Live music connects audience members with one another and actively lowers stress hormones. Similarly, the Park District’s free summertime movie series, A Night at the Movies, brings family movie night to community parks. Residents gather with chairs, blankets and snacks to enjoy a family-friendly flick.
However, our community members don’t need to wait for events such as these to spend time with one another. Friends and family can get together whenever they want in one of the Park District’s 140 parks - and one of the most relaxing activities to do with loved ones in the parks is picnicking. Picnics are an easy way to turn a simple meal into a special, memorable outing. There are a variety of picnicking spots throughout Naperville – from small picnic shelters by park playgrounds to open spaces surrounded by trees and foliage, which are perfect for laying out blanket and enjoying a leisurely meal outdoors. Regardless of your chosen picnicking spot, it is a unique way to relax and share a memorable meal with someone special.
Mindfulness through Programs

Lastly, exercise and movement can help relax the mind, and Naperville Park District offers fitness and wellness programs to promote a healthy lifestyle and mindset. Two exercises that are commonly linked to focus and relaxation are yoga and meditation. Yoga unites the mind, body and spirit through movement and various postures. Meditation is a mental practice that helps foster a state of clarity, emotional calm and deep relaxation through stillness and mindful breathing. The Park District offers classes in these disciplines, and they are proven methods of relaxation that lead to a healthier mindset.
Meditation for Youth is a program designed for participants ages 6-12 years old to learn the tools needed for managing stress, anxiety, emotions and more. As a child’s brain develops, it is important for them to take time to “unplug” to relax and focus. Meditation offers this break to help kids function more effectively and clearly. Participants will understand the importance of mindfulness and coping skills as they age.
The Naperville Park District hosts a variety of yoga programs throughout the year at Fort Hill Activity Center, as well as group yoga classes for Fort Hill Fitness members. In addition to indoor yoga programs, two different outdoor programs are offered during the summer: Beach Yoga and Paddleboard Yoga. Each program is held near and in the cool waters of Centennial Beach, with the goal of taking yogis of all levels through a journey of strengthening their mind and while enjoying the outdoors. A free Morning Yoga program is also hosted during the summer as part of the Free Outdoor Fitness Events as a way to introduce the practice to beginners.
