2018 Pumpkin Smash

Our 2nd Annual PUMPKIN SMASH took place on Saturday, November 3.

This year we received 411 pumpkins for a total of 4956 pounds!

Many thanks to the boy scout troops and other volunteers who helped make this event possible!

Composting pumpkins in the Park District's garden plots keeps them out of the landfill and reduces the amount of methane gas that's released into the atmosphere. Methane gas contributes to climate change.

Plus the nutrients and water from the pumpkins will go back into the soil, enriching it for the gardeners who rent a plot next year.

The Pumpkin Smash is always held the first Saturday after Halloween.

This one day annual event was started by SCARCE and the cities of Wheaton and Elmhurst and has now expanded to 35 communities in Illinois.
