The skate facility at Frontier Sports Complex will be renovated in the spring/summer 2021. The Park District identified that the equipment has reached the end of its lifecycle due to typical wear and needs to be replaced.

The Park District began planning for the renovations in 2020, first by consulting with American Ramp Company to ensure that the project will be relevant and current in regard to design, equipment and usage in order to meet the needs of the skating community. American Ramp Company is owned and operated by skateboarding enthusiasts and the District selected them for the project considering their 20+ years of experience designing and building skate parks across the US and internationally. Their representatives collaborated with Park District staff to conduct an initial survey to understand the desires of skaters in the community relative to skate facility design. The resulting design is a reflection of input received to create a facility that will be accessible for all ages and abilities.

Currently the Frontier Skate Facility construction is under contract and the equipment is being manufactured. Construction is scheduled to begin this May with the intent to reach substantial completion in June pending favorable weather conditions. Additionally, as the skate facility site is being prepared for the new equipment installation, the fencing will be removed in order for concrete repairs to take place in early April; this requires closing the skate facility for approximately one week. The existing equipment will be removed prior to construction planned for May; some skate equipment pieces will be reused at similar facilities and others that cannot be repurposed will be dismantled and recycled.

As this project progresses, updates will be posted to this page.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 Naperville Park District officials heard the good news for which they have been waiting for many months: the District has achieved national accreditation through the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).

The decision was announced at the NRPA national conference in Atlanta following a formal hearing before the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).

Naperville is only the second park district in Illinois to earn this distinction and the 104th nationally accredited agency in the nation; there are more than 10,000 recreation agencies in the United States. The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies accredits a handful of park agencies each year that have completed a multi-step process involving a self-review by the agency, a site visit, and an evaluation and formal report by the Commission.

“We are extremely proud to bring this honor to Naperville,” said Park District Executive Director Ray McGury. “It’s an affirmation of our high standards and also an encouragement to continue bringing high quality recreation and parks experiences to our community.”

The Park District’s accreditation process began approximately one year ago and included an extensive self-evaluation by staff and a 5-day visit from CAPRA reviewers this past July. Maintaining the accreditation requires annual reports and 5- and 10-year reviews.

Park District staff members noted that the CAPRA process has helped them see the big picture, focus on long term goals and plans, review plans more regularly, organize documents so that they are accessible and useable, and collaborate more effectively with other departments and outside organizations.
