Connecting Community Projects

Following a successful March 17, 2026 referendum, the Naperville Park District is moving forward with key community-focused initiatives, including: 

  1. Construction of a new community activity center at Frontier Sports Complex with fitness and exercise rooms, walking/jogging track, gymnasiums, indoor swimming pools, and rooms for programs and community activities. This facility is anticipated to open in approximately 3 years (sometime in 2029), allowing time for design, permitting, and construction.

  2. Acquisition of additional land at Heritage Woods and Walnut Ridge Park for the purpose of preserving, restoring, and maintaining open space and extending trails 

This page will serve as a central hub for updates on the progress of these projects, from land acquisition through planning, design, and construction. You are invited to check back here for updates; the Park District also will communicate key steps in the process in other ways including press releases and social media. 

For the purpose of transparency and continued access, referendum materials and information will also be archived here for reference.

June 25, 2026
At its June 25, 2026 meeting, the Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners approved several professional services contracts that will support the planning and construction of the new Community Activity Center at Frontier Sports Complex.

The approved professional services contracts and related scope of work include:

Construction Management: these services involve constructability review, schedule monitoring, cost estimating, and on-site construction management of the Community Activity Center.  In addition, the construction management team will assist with preparing construction trade packages and coordinating all bid phase services.  The trade contracts will be presented to the Board for review and approval when ready.

Building Commissioning: The Building Commissioning agent will provide engineering and professional services involving mechanical, plumbing, electrical, security, life safety, emergency power, fire protection, and energy modeling of the Community Activity Center during the construction phase.  

Geotechnical: The geotechnical services include the formulation of geotechnical and engineering reports with recommendations in coordination with the project team. 

The project team is currently preparing design drawings for the project.  In addition, the geotechnical team is in the process of conducting soil borings within the project area at Frontier Sports Complex and developing a geotechnical report.  The report findings will assist the project team in formulating site layout and structural plans for the new Community Activity Center.  

June 4, 2026 
In early June 2026, the Naperville Park District officially acquired the Heritage Woods and Walnut Ridge Park expansion properties to preserve open space for conservation and provide additional nature trails. The expansion properties in both locations are currently closed while the Park District prepares the sites for public use. Please note that the adjacent existing parks remain open. The new parcels are scheduled to be opened for the community to enjoy in 2027. 

April 10, 2026 
On April 9, 2026, the Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners approved an architectural and engineering professional services contract with Williams Architects, Ltd. for design of the new Community Activity Center at Frontier Sports Complex.  The professional services team will consist of architects, engineers, and other specialty consultants in order to effectively complete the scope of design work.  The team will provide design development, construction documentation and permitting services, bidding assistance, and project observation during construction.  Williams Architects was hired by the Park District in 2025 to provide the preliminary conceptual design of the Community Activity Center, and was the architect for the Fort Hill Activity Center, which opened in 2016.
