Carol Manderfield - Publications Designer

Carol Manderfield grew up in a small town in Illinois where she immersed herself in a range of activities, spanning from athletics to the arts. Uncertain about her career path, she enrolled at the College of DuPage, focusing on interior design, graphic design, and illustration. Her professional journey commenced as a graphic designer in the art department of a local newspaper.  

Q&A with Carol

Describe your path to the parks and recreation industry. Did you start your career from the beginning in this industry? If not, how did you get here and why did you pursue a job in this field?
I started off my professional career as a graphic designer creating ads for a local newspaper. After about 7 years, I changed media companies and was hired on as their publication designer. I was responsible for designing numerous monthly magazines, as well as quarterly and annual publications. While I really enjoyed the job, I felt the industry was becoming unstable. When I spotted an opening for a publication designer at the Naperville Park District, I knew it would be a perfect fit! 

Please explain your specific role as succinctly as possible, including which department you work in.
As the Publications Designer working in the Marketing Department for the Naperville Park District, I am responsible for the layout and design of the quarterly program guide, brochures, booklets, panel cards, mailers and more.

What about your life in general makes this industry a good fit for you?
Working in the marketing department of parks and recreation is perfect for creative and active individuals.
